The history of the Tschuggen Hotel Group - synonymous with luxury in dream locations in Switzerland

The story of the successful private company began in Arosa where, in 1980, the present owner Karl-Heinz Kipp acquired the Grand Hotel Tschuggen, an establishment dating back to 1929. At that time, the Kipp family already owned two conference hotels in Germany, which formed the basis for this decision. This first jewel, now renowned throughout the world for the impressive Tschuggen Bergoase designed by Mario Botta, lent its name to the hotel group, which is today a fixed institution in the Swiss hotel industry.

At the beginning of the 1980s, it was joined by the four-star Valsana hotel in Arosa, whose excellent location and magnificent park-like grounds made it a “sports-oriented complement” to the Tschuggen Grand Hotel. The new owners set about turning the hotel, one of the oldest in Arosa, into an excellently equipped sports hotel with an ultra-modern tennis hall.

In spring 1988, the group was then offered the Carlton Hotel St. Moritz, which had had many difficult years behind it since its opening in 1913. It was love at first sight for this beautiful, old-established hotel with its incomparable location. At last, the hotel had owners – the Kipp-Bechtolsheimer family – with both the courage and the tenacity to restore it to the ranks of the resort’s top hotels; following an 18-month total renovation, it re-opened in new splendour in 2006/2007.

In 1989 it was followed by the Eden Roc on the Lake Maggiore shoreline in Ascona. The combination of the Mediterranean climate of Ticino and the mild temperatures even in winter made it the perfect complement to the winter-sports hotels. In 2000, the Tschuggen Hotel Group doubled the capacity of the prize-winning luxury hotel by acquiring the neighbouring, former four-star “Europe au Lac” hotel.

Starting in 2008, both the Hotel Eden Roc and also the Tschuggen Grand Hotel in Arosa are open virtually all year round so as to appeal to new target groups, to make Switzerland even more attractive as a holiday destination and to create more long-term jobs for their employees. In addition, the Tschuggen Hotel Group is investing heavily in its properties in order to maintain its leading position in terms of architecture, interior design and spa, and to impress its guests again and again.

During the years from 2000 to the present day, numerous large-scale projects have been initiated and realised within the Tschuggen Hotel Group. In Ascona the Eden Roc Spa is currently undergoing modernisation and expansion to create a total area of 1500 m². At the same time, the adjoining former Hotel Ascolago with its 16 rooms and large restaurant is being taken over and renamed “Eden Roc Marina”. In total, by the end of the decade, the investment volume will amount to almost CHF 260 million.
